Step 1 of 3: Equipment
Unfinished basement with exposed wood joists, a large galvanized metal duct running along the ceiling, a stacked pile of split firewood against a concrete block wall, and sawdust scattered on the concrete floor.

Ductwork laid in for one generation of equipment and then adapted, sometimes more than once, is what a contractor opening up a water heater job here is likely to find. Half the homes in Adams County, Idaho were built in 1986 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). That history matters at the install stage because the runs, connections, and clearances already in the house reflect decisions made for something earlier, and the question is whether what is there now actually fits what is going in. A contractor quotes the new unit and then works out what the house already has that carries it.

What a Water Heater Installation Covers

Isometric cutaway illustration of a small house with a dark shingled roof, showing interior rooms with a bed, bathtub, sink, kitchen counter, and a tall cylindrical water heater connected to a vertical flue pipe through the roof.

The tank or heating unit is the centerpiece of the system. It sits in a utility room, basement, garage, or closet and holds water at a set temperature so hot water reaches every tap on demand. A new installation means placing that unit, connecting it to the cold water supply line, and running a hot water outlet line to the rest of the house.

The pressure relief valve mounts directly on the tank and releases pressure if it climbs too high. A drain valve sits at the base for future servicing. On gas units, a flue or vent pipe runs from the top of the unit out through the wall or roof to carry combustion gases outside.

The drawing shows a general layout of these components, and a licensed contractor determines exactly what applies to your home's configuration.
