Step 1 of 3: Equipment
Basement interior with exposed wood joists, galvanized sheet-metal HVAC ducts along the ceiling, a concrete block wall, and a large pile of split firewood on a concrete floor scattered with wood debris.

Electrical service in the older half of Boise County's housing stock was sized for equipment that no longer matches what a new water heater pulls. Half the homes in Boise County, Idaho were built in 1991 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A contractor quoting an installation has to look at the panel and the existing runs before pricing the unit, because what the house already carries decides whether new wiring is part of the job. That answer comes from the breaker box, not from the age on the permit.

What a Water Heater Installation Covers

Isometric cutaway illustration of a small house in grey tones, showing interior rooms with furniture, sinks, and a cylindrical water heater with connected pipes and a flue in a utility area.

The tank or unit itself is the centerpiece of the installation. In most homes it stands in a utility closet, basement, or garage, and its job is to hold and heat water until a tap calls for it. A contractor sets the unit in place, connects it to the cold supply line, and ties the hot outlet into the pipes that run to the rest of the house.

The pressure relief valve mounts directly on the unit and gives overheated water a safe path out through a discharge pipe routed to a drain or to the exterior. Where gas is the fuel source, a contractor also connects the gas line and fits a flue or vent pipe that carries combustion exhaust out of the living space.

The drawing shows a representative layout, and a licensed contractor determines what applies to your specific home and its existing plumbing and fuel connections.
