Step 1 of 3: Equipment
Unfinished basement with exposed wood floor joists, galvanized metal ductwork with a register boot, concrete walls and floor, a stacked pile of split firewood in the corner, and sawdust scattered on the floor.

Ductwork and venting runs laid down for one generation of water heater do not automatically suit the next. Half the homes in Blaine County, Idaho were built in 1987 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A contractor pricing a new installation in this county starts with what the existing venting can actually handle, because flue sizing, combustion air supply, and exhaust routing were built around equipment whose specs differ from what is going in now. If the existing runs work, the job is straightforward. If they do not, the scope changes before a unit is even chosen.

What a Water Heater Installation Covers

Isometric cutaway illustration of a small single-story house with a dark shingled roof, showing interior rooms with a water heater and vent pipe, kitchen counters and sinks, a bathroom, and a bedroom, on a white background.

The tank or heating unit is the centerpiece of the system, sitting in a utility room, basement, or garage and holding water at a set temperature so hot water is ready when a tap opens. A pressure relief valve mounts directly on the tank as a safety device, and the thermostat controls the target temperature.

Cold supply lines feed water into the unit and hot output lines carry it to the rest of the house. A drain valve sits near the base of the tank, and in some configurations an expansion tank mounts on the cold supply line nearby to manage pressure.

The drawing shows a general layout of these components, and a licensed contractor determines exactly what applies to your home.
