Step 1 of 3: Equipment
Unfinished basement with concrete block walls, exposed wood floor joists and galvanized metal ductwork overhead, and a stack of split firewood on a concrete floor scattered with sawdust.

Ductwork laid out for one generation of equipment does not automatically suit the next, and in Fremont County the gap between what a house was built for and what runs in it now is wide enough that the existing layout becomes the first thing a contractor works through. Half the homes in Fremont County, Idaho were built in 1979 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). That history means the plumbing runs, venting paths, and available clearances in a typical house here reflect choices made for equipment long gone, and a water heater installation turns on what those original configurations will and will not accommodate.

What a New Water Heater Installation Covers

Isometric cutaway illustration of a house with a dark shingled roof, showing a cylindrical water heater with a flue pipe running through the roof, plus kitchen counters, a sink, a bathtub and cabinets inside.

The tank is the centerpiece: a large insulated vessel that sits in a utility closet, basement, or garage and holds water at a set temperature until a tap calls for it. On top of or beside it, the inlet and outlet connections bring cold water in and send hot water out through the house.

The pressure relief valve mounts directly on the tank and opens if pressure inside climbs too high. The anode rod hangs inside the tank to slow corrosion of the metal walls. A drain valve at the base and the flue or venting pipe above round out what a contractor fits during installation.

The drawing shows a general layout of these components, and a licensed contractor determines what applies to your specific home and setup.
